SumiLicious brings Montreal smoked meat to Steeles.
Sumith Fernando spent years at Schwartz’s before opening this strip-mall deli, now a Bib Gourmand at $.
Located in a modest strip mall at Middlefield and Steeles in northern Scarborough, SumiLicious is instantly recognizable by the queue of eager diners and the hypnotic aroma of coriander, black peppercorns, and smoldering hardwood smoke wafting into the parking lot.
Pitmaster Sumith Fernando, who spent 17 years hand-slicing brisket at Montreal's legendary Schwartz's Deli, brings old-world Jewish-Romanian curing technique to the GTA: beef briskets dry-cured for over two weeks in proprietary spices, smoked for hours, steamed to tenderness, and sliced by hand across the grain while hot and dripping.
The counter hums with swift, welcoming energy; Sumith chats with customers from every cultural corner of Toronto as cleavers thud rhythmic beats against thick wooden cutting boards, mounding glistening spiced beef high between slices of seed rye spread with sharp yellow mustard and served with Cott's black cherry soda.
Awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand, SumiLicious exemplifies the true democratic greatness of Scarborough dining: immigrant grit, decades of honed knife craft, and culinary perfection served without pretension on butcher paper.
